Club History

The club began in La Honda in 2003 for their first formal meeting. Prior to that, two residents, Jack WA6YJR and Greg WA6DQP were meeting for coffee in downtown La Honda and discovered they were both hams. They talked about what they could do to create an emergency group in La Honda. They sent postcards to all the hams in the area and had their first meeting and subsequent meetings at the church. Founding members were Jack Eddy, Greg McCartney, Glen "Doc" Haydon, Craig Eddy, Laurie McLean, Reg K. and Will Johnson.

The group began to really grow in 2007 as Jack began offering licensing classes to the community. Regular monthly meetings were established and the club nominated officers.

In 2014 SC4ARC became a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and a few years later formalized their relationship with La Honda Fire Brigade as their served agency. The club sponsors SC4ARES, the Amateur Radio Emergency Services which provides emergency communication services during disasters for the South Coast of San Mateo County. Our ARES Emergency Coordinator serves as liason between SC4 and La Honda Fire.

We currently have more than 50 members, the majority of which are ARRL ARES members, which allows them to be activated in the event of a disaster, local emergency, or even severe weather events or power outages.
